The ITSM discipline deserves some credit for popularizing the concept of the IT Service Catalog — a comprehensive inventory of a service organization’s offerings. The Service Catalog concept never really reached the levels of maturity as most had hoped, mainly due to the enormous scope of Enterprise IT and trying to map this into a single pane of glass.
Well things have certainly changed. The service catalog has involved, taking inspiration from appstores and consumer (B2C) self-service portals. Today’s Enterprises and Service Providers are serving their ‘tech savvy’ customers via an IT Service Appstore, a blend of all the good stuff from the Service Catalog (like governance, auditability and integration) with the ease of use of an appstore. The IT Service Appstore also serves a new breed of consumer within the Enterprise, the Digital User, alongside more established personas like DevOps.
